Event Photos A dozen talented young athletes won the prestigious USA Wrestling Kids Triple Crown, by capturing the third and final leg of the series, the Kids National Greco-Roman Championships in Menomonie, Wis., July 3. Riley Adamson of Rio Rancho, N.M., who captured the freestyle title at 95 pounds on the Schoolboy/girl age level (13-14 years), won an unprecedented sixth straight Triple Crown. He has now won two Triple Crowns as a Midget , two as a Novice, and two as a Schoolboy/girl. He has swept the Kids Triple Crown in all six years that he was eligible, winning 18 straight USA Wrestling national titles. His finals match was quite competitive, where he beat Matt Lester of Wildwood, Mo., 14-7. Lester scored first, but Adamson took the lead with some dominant turns from the mat. A call for an illegal body scizzors against Adamson closed the gap to a one-point lead at 8-7 for Adamson at the break. In the second period, Adamson dominated on his feet, winning four straight takedowns. In the closing seconds, he added a two-point tilt for six straight points and a 14-7 win. The freestyle tournament started with 14 athletes still in the hunt for the Triple Crown, and 12 were able to survive the third and final test to claim the honor. This included five Schoolboy/girl athletes, three Novice athletes (11-12 years) and four Midget athletes (9-10 years). Joining Adamson as Schoolboy/girl Triple Crown winners were Sharky Slyter of Paola, Kan. at 70 pounds, Nick Lester of Wildwood, Mo. at 90 pounds, Joshua Wiseman of Brooklyn Park, Minn. at 120 pounds and Grant Gambrall of Iowa City, Iowa at 130 pounds. Two of the matches featured finalists from the same state. Slyter beat Chaz Lawrence of Olathe, Kan., 7-2 in the finals. Lester edged Kyle Mears (St. Robert, MO), 3-2 for the gold. Wiseman also had a close match, beating Cole Schmitt of New Glarus, Wis., 5-4. Gambrall pinned Chris Schultz of Gillette, Wyo. in 2:43. The Triple Crown winners in the Novice Division were Ravaughn Perkins of Omaha, Neb. at 75 pounds, Nick Moore of Durango, Iowa at 95 pounds and Brett Jaeckel of Hendersonville, Tenn. at 140+ pounds. Perkins scored a quick 27-second fall in his gold-medal match against Dylan Ness of Bloomington, Minn. Moore was also dominant in the finals, with a 15-3 technical fall over J.T. Felix of Riverside, Calif., 15-3. Jaeckel earned his title in a five-athlete roundrobin. The Midget Division winners of the Triple Crown were Brandon Sorenson of Cedar Falls, Iowa at 70 pounds, Oliver Pierce of Allen, Texas at 80 pounds, Glenn Climmons of Hiram, Ga. at 103 pounds and Alexander Lennartson of Balsam Lake, Wis. at 120 pounds. Sorenson scored a 7-2 win over Natrelle Demison of Bakersfield, Calif. To capture his freestyle title. Pierce edged Brandon McBride of Dayton, Idaho, 5-3 for the title. Climmons won a five athlete roundrobin, winning two matches by technical fall. Lennartson emerged from a three-athlete roundrobin, where he pinned both of his opponents. The first leg of the Triple Crown was the USA Wrestling Kids Folkstyle Nationals, held in Cedar Falls, Iowa in April. Eight wrestlers won the Kids Freestyle Nationals for the second straight year, including Climmons, Slyter and Adamson, plus John Sims of Indiana (Midget 87), Jesse Delgado fo California (Novice 70), Riley Ewalt of Michigan (Novice 80), Alex Meade of Delaware (Schoolboy/girl 100) and Sam Brownlee of Pennsylvania (Schoolboy/girl 160+++) In addition, there were 32 wrestlers who were double champions this week, winning both the freestyle and Greco-Roman titles here in Menomonie. This included the 12 Triple Crown winners, plus Midgets Dylan Lucas of Florida (50), Sam Brancale of Minnesota (55), Jared Cortez of Colorado (60), Brandon Kingsley of Minnesota (65), Jordan Sepeda of California (95), Isaac Eichmann of Minnesota (112), Novice wrestlers Eric DeVos of Iowa (70), John Sims of Indiana (90), Dontevous Loyd of Nebraska (100), Stanley Taylor of Nebraska (105), Zachary Skates of Oklahoma (112), Joe Raygor of Wisconsin (120), Daniel Jenks of New York (130), and Schoolboy/girl athletes Alex Kostenborder of Oregon (75), Riley Ewalt of Michigan (85), Travis Rutt of Minnesota (115), Zac Cibula of Wisconsin (125), Zachary Benzio of Pennsylvania (165), Bill Reitz of Pennsylvania (205) and Sam Brownlee of Pennsylvania (250). The six USA Wrestling Regionals are the Northeast, Southeast, Central, Northern Plains, Southern Plains and West, and were held earlier this spring. All of the athletes in this event had to have participated on the Regional level to be entered.
