Atlanta, Ga. - The U.S. wrestling team defeated the Republic of Georgia in Greco-Roman wrestling 13-9 and Spain in men's freestyle wrestling 28-1 on Saturday evening at the 2004 Titan Games, Built by Home Depot. Competition was held in front of 4,324 fans at Phillips Arena in downtown Atlanta. The Titan Games is a multi-sport event where competition is held simultaneously on multiple platforms. On Friday evening, wrestling, boxing, fencing, judo and taekwondo held competitions. 11 of the 13 men's Olympians in wrestling competed on Saturday evening. Women's freestyle competition will begin on Saturday versus Canada. Olympic gold medalist Rulon Gardner (Cascade, Colo./Sunkist Kids) defeated Revaz Chelidze of Georgia 4-0 at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. to lead the Greco-Roman squad. Gardner scored three of his points in the first period before holding on for the win. "This was a good tune-up for me. It's good to get out on the mat and test some of the things I have been working on in live competition," Gardner said. As was expected, the U.S. dominated the competition on the mat, winning four of the five matches against the Republic of Georgia. The most exciting of those wins was at 60 kg/132 lbs. Two-time Olympian Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Lasha Lomadze 6-3 in overtime. In the extra period, Gruenwald got behind Lomadze and threw him for three points for the win. "I knew he had lungs the size of a thimble, so I just had to keep pounding," Gruenwald said after his first international match since the 2003 World Championships. "In the beginning, I didn't establish a good position, so it made him look better." 2000 Olympic bronze medalist Garrett Lowney (Freedom, Wis./Minnesota Storm) was unable to compete due to an injured shoulder.
