Vegas Revisited NCEP Learning Module Volume 1 of the Repeat Performance Series Every year USA Wrestling in cooperation with a local organizing committee hosts America's preeminent open wrestling tournament. For the past several years the U.S. Nationals has been held in Las Vegas, Nevada under the direction of Larry Barnson and the Las Vegas Sports Committee. The U.S. Nationals is really three major wrestling events in one since both Men's Freestyle and Greco-Roman is contested as well as Women's Freestyle. The talent in the U.S. Nationals Tournaments is wide and deep as past NCAA stars collide with current collegiate competitors. In 2003 66 kgs, was an excellent example of how talented the field was. Olympic Bronze Medalist Lincoln McIlravy, was seeded along side fellow NCAA Champions such as Chris Bono, Bill Zadick, and Tony Davis. Just to get the weight class seeded took nearly an hour. The men's tournaments wrestle the following weight classes 55 kgs, 60, kgs, 66 kgs, 74 kgs, 84 kgs, 96 kgs, and 120 kgs. The women's weight classes are 48 kgs, 51 kgs, 55 kgs, 59 kgs, 63 kgs, 67 kgs, 72 kgs. In 2004 Women's Freestyle wrestling will debut in the Athens, Olympic Games at the following four weight classes: 48 kgs, 55 kgs, 63 kgs, and 72 kgs. It is hoped that a successful showing in the 2004 games will lead the International Olympic Committee to make all seven weight classes "Olympic weights" for the 2008 games in Beijing, China. For coaches that have never attended the U.S. Nationals in Las Vegas it can truly be said that you are missing out! Make it your goal to attend this fantastic weekend of wrestling, and if you have it in you, bring some of your wrestlers to compete in the Western Regional Junior Tournament held alongside the Senior event. Attached you will find the worksheet for completing the "Vegas Revisited" learning module. Please fill out the worksheet completely and legibly and return it to USA Wrestling's NCEP office.
