National Coaches Education Program Silver Level Purpose This is the second of a three part advanced coaching education program. It provides coaches with extensive information about the practical applications of coaching theory and provides them with an opportunity to apply their knowledge through research in the field of wrestling. Audience For coaches who have completed the Bronze level and who wish to become superior coaches. For coaches who have considerable coaching experience and desire additional formal training in coaching. Curriculum Coaches will attend a five-day Coaches College. The site and date will be determined by USA Wrestling. This Coaches College will be held one to two times annually and will be announced to all Bronze certified coaches. Coaches will receive advanced instruction regarding diet and nutrition, the psychology of wrestling, peak performance principles, risk management and other wrestling related curriculum. Coaches will also be required to submit to USAW eight out of twenty task criteria. The task criteria will be broken down into four areas in which there will be five task within each area. These areas are as follows: 1. Planning the development of the athlete. (i.e. integrate physiological, psychological, technical and tactical factors into an annual training program for elite wrestlers.) 2. Physiological development of the athlete. (i.e. plan, conduct, and evaluate a training program to meet the energy demands of wrestling) 3. Psychological development of the athlete. (i.e. develop a psychological profile and plan the mental development of an athlete) 4. Technical development of the athlete. (i.e. plan, develop, and analyze a technical instruction progression chart as a part of a season plan) Coaches are required to complete at least one task from each of these sections in order to be considered for Silver Certification. (eight tasks overall) Coaches will also be required to host a Bronze Level clinic for completion of Silver certification. Technical Certification The technical certification will be done through the Coaches College in association with a USAW age group developmental camp. At the Silver level, a coach can be certified in either Freestyle or Greco-Roman. Silver level technical certification may be granted as a result of meeting one or more of the following criteria: 1. Having been a World level tourney (FILA "A" Continental, World, or Olympic) Top ten placer. 2. Having been a member of a senior level national team and achieving a ranking of third or better (Criteria must have been met within eight years of Silver level application.) Instructors All course instruction will be provided by USA Wrestling approved instructors. Instructor Resources All pertinent instructional materials as required by course instructors will be provided by USA Wrestling. Course site and dates To be determined by USA Wrestling. All qualified coaches will be notified via mail, phone, USA publication and/or www.themat.com Course Fees The cost of the Coaches College will be determined by USA Wrestling. Any other fees associated with Silver Level certification will be outlined upon application. Awards Upon course completion, Silver certified coaches will receive a certificate of Silver certification, , and a USAW Silver certified special edition watch. This achievement will also be noted on a special plaque of coaching accomplishment to be displayed at USAW headquarters in Colorado Springs, Co. Task #1; Physiological Plan conduct and evaluate a training program to meet the energy demands of wrestling. Possible Topics of Consideration: How to apply the principles of optimum physiological preparation of elite wrestlers to training programs with particular emphasis on: *Training periods a) Interaction between intensity, volume and general and specific training in relation to the training year b) Differences with different age groups *Special training principles a) Systematization b) Repetition c) Interaction between aerobic, strength and power training d) Interaction between quantity and quality of training over short periods e) Tapering for peak performance *Aerobic power and capacity a) VO2 maximum b) Aerobic capacity c) Lactate threshold d) Field test for aerobic power and capacity e) Training methods for endurance *Anaerobic power and capacity a) Lactic vs. alactic anaerobic power and capacity b) Factors affecting anaerobic power c) Effects of muscle strength and power on anaerobic tests d) Training methods for speed e) Program prescription based on test results. Evaluation The evaluation methods utilized (i.e. written reports, training diaries, case studies, etc.) should be forwarded to the USAW NCEP Coordinator. This documentation will then be evaluated by the NCEP Coordinator and USAW National Coaching Staff based on an assessment of knowledge assimilated from the "Possible Topics of Consideration" content and application of knowledge gained. If a task is incomplete, the evaluators will identify what is lacking and will provide the coach with the direction necessary to complete the task. Judgment of task completion will be done Pass/Fail, with comments attached to assist in completion of the task if the task was viewed as unsatisfactory. Task #2; Physiological Plan conduct and evaluate a strength training program for elite wrestlers. Possible Topics of Consideration: How to apply the principles of strength and power training with particular emphasis on: *Skeletal muscle structure *Strength *Adaptations with strength and power training *Practical demonstrations of how to train most effectively a) Plyometric training b) Eccentric training c) Cross training *Periodization of strength training *Nutrition and its' role in strength training *Strength training and the child athlete *Tests for strength and power *Definition of muscular strength, power, and endurance *Measurements of strength, power and endurance *Program design based on test results Evaluation The evaluation methods utilized (i.e. written reports, training diaries, case studies, etc.) should be forwarded to the USAW NCEP Coordinator. Possible Topics of Consideration: *Application of nutritional requirements to endurance training and to interval training (including pre vs post training diets), *Nutrition before, during and after competition, *The influence of time, stress, activity, volume of water, temperature and nature of the fluid (sugar, sodium, potassium percentage) which affects hydration, *Methods of monitoring an athlete's diet, *Adaptation of diet and hydration to lesson the effects of travel across time zones, *Develop and evaluate a weight loss dietary regime.
