Five high school seniors, all with exemplary backgrounds and acheivements have been selected as regional winners of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award. The Schultz Award is given to a high school senior in each state of the union. EAch recipients selection is based on three equal criteria: academics, athletic acheivement and community service/involvement. The award is named for Dave Schultz, a highly decorated collegiate and freestyle wrestler. Dave was a uniquely gifted person who was liked by teammates and foriegn wrestlers alike who was taken from us all to soon. The 2004 Dave Schultz High School Excellence regional winners are: Jordan Leen, Soddy Daisy, Tennessee, graduated from Baylor High School with many academic honors as well as athletic achievements. He was a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics, Chemistry Olympiad, National Honor Roll and named to the Baylor Distinguished List. He was also selected to the Wrestling USA Magazine Academic Team. Leen is a four time Tennessee state champion and was named the 2004 Outstanding Wrestler. He is the winningest wrestler in Tennessee history with a four year career record of 191-3. He won the 2004 NHSCA High School Championship. For his athletic accomplishments he was named Chattanooga Area Athlete of the Year, the Chattanooga Times-Free Press Wrestler of the Year, and the Stump on Sports Television Area Athlete of the Year. To give back to his community and school, Leen volunteers at the Erlanger Hospital and the Inner City Youth Club. He serves as a Peer Tutor and helped with the Cancer Relay for Life. He is active with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Young-Life. Steve Luke, graduated from Perry High School, Massillon, Ohio, with honors. He is a three time Academic All Ohioan, received the President's Education Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence and the Scholastic Achievement Award four times. He is also a member of the National Honor Society. Luke's outstanding wrestling career record of 155-14 includes three Ohio state championships, a runner-up his freshman year, and being named the 2004 Outstanding Wrestler. He won the NHSCA Senior National Championship, the Ironman Championship, Beast of the East and MIT championships. He was a two time Junior Freestyle All-American and a Cadet Freestyle All-American. He was selected to participate in the Dapper Dan and Dream Team. For his many accomplishments Luke was named the Stark County Wrestler of the Year three times, the Outstanding Jr. Student and the Outstanding Sr. Scholar Athlete from Perry Rotary. Luke was a Buckeye Boys State Representative in 2003. He generously volunteers with Senior Citizens and is a math coach for Jr. High students. Brandon Mason, an honor roll student from Lewis Central High School, Council Bluffs, Iowa, will have completed 24 hours of college credit by the time he completes high school. Twice he was named a National High School Coaches Association Academic All-American and was selected first team Academic All State three times. As a three time Iowa State Champion with a career record of 195-2, Mason was named the 2004 Iowa Wrestler of the Year. Three times he won the Tulsa Championship and was named the Outstanding Wrestler. He has won the AAU National Championship, the Schoolboy Greco National. Championship twice, the Schoolboy Freestyle National Championship and the Schoolboy Folkstyle National Championship. He is a Cadet Freestyle National Champion and placed 2nd in the Cadet Greco Championships. Mason has been active with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and is a Senior Class Officer. He has volunteered over 100 hours of service to local kids clubs. Nathan Morgan is a CIF Central Section Scholar Athlete from Bakersfield High School, Bakersfield, California. He is a three time California State Champion, and placed second his freshman year, making him the fourth in California history to be a four time state finalist. His wrestling career record is 166-6. Four times he won the Doc Buchanan Championship, being named the Outstanding Wrestler three times. He was also a four time Five Counties Champion. He was a finalist at the Reno Tournament of Champions four times and won the championship three times. Morgan also won the Dapper Dan tournament. He was named to the Wrestling USA Dream Team. While not participating in sports, Morgan has been very active with AWANA, a Bible memorization club, memorizing over 990 verses. He is proud of the fact that he has read the entire Bible. He spent two weeks in Russia to minister and wrestle. He volunteers at the Senior Olympics and helps with the Senior Citizen Day at the Fair. He has raised money for a Boys and Girls Club and coaches kids wrestling. Coleman Scott a three time Pennsylvania state champion from Waynesburg Central High School, Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, enjoyed a high school wrestling career record of 156-12. He was named the Outstanding Wrestler his senior year. He was also named the Outstanding Wrestler at the Dapper Dan Classic and the Dream Team Classic. He won the Powerade Championship three times, as well as the Beast of the East Championship and the Ironman Championship. To top off his career, he won the Junior National Freestyle Championship and the Cadet National Greco Championship, placing third in the Cadet National Freestyle tournament. He also excelled in soccer, being named All Section in Soccer twice. Scott is a member of the National Honor Society and was named Lions Club Boy of the Month. Three times he received special recognition at the Washington-Greene County Banquet. Scott generously volunteers with the St. Paris Youth Group and coaches youth t-ball. He is active in the Students Against Drunk Driving organization and served as a team leader for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. The national winner will be announced during the Honors Ceremony on June 5, 2004 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
