Gardner was interviewed by Today hosts Katie Couric and Matt Lauer outside of the NBC studios in Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. He was a part of the segment of the show which was broadcast after 8:30 a.m. EST. Making light of Gardner's recent mishap on a motorcycle in Colorado Springs, Colo., Gardner rode into the interview riding a motorcycle, then got off the bike and spoke with both Couric and Lauer. During the interview, Gardner discussed a number of topics, including his victory at the U.S. Olympic Team - Trials in Indianapolis, Ind. last week, his expectations for the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, as well as his well publicized health challenges. As part of the interview, Lauer took hold of Gardner's hand, and pointed out where he had pins inserted through surgery during his training period prior to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. He discussed his motorcycle accident, as well as the hand injury he received in April while playing basketball as part of his cross-training. At the end of the interview, Gardner gave Couric a little hug for the cameras. Since his stunning victory at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, Gardner has been a frequent guest on the Today Show, and has become friends with Couric. The interview was conducted outside, in the area where spectators and fans are able to congregate. At the conclusion of his interview, Gardner posed for photos with many of the spectators. Gardner earned the spot on the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team in Greco-Roman wrestling on Sunday, defeating 2002 World Champion Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) in a dramatic Championship Series in Indianapolis.
